BULL SHARKS!

Holidays Approach Means Shark Bite Near

Gary Anderson

With improving weather conditions and the sea slowly cooling down, a better variety sharks are now being caught along our coastline. A few king mackerels along with their cousins the Ceros and Spanish are still on the rampage and some specimens up to the 40 pounds mark have been landed at various spots along the beaches by anglers targeting other species especially those who are using live bait. Some skates and sand sharks are now being caught, as well the infamous Bulls are moving into the area with a off and on bite occurring it seems late in the night or early in the morning way before sunrise on an incoming or rising tide. There are already reports of some big sand sharks in the 90 pound to 200 plus poundage mark being landed during the course of last week end around the Casperson’s Point of Rock area running baits out with yaks. This could be a welcome return after the dismal run we had last year. Some good size Reds are being landed at night and smaller kingfish, Blue fish, Flounder and the odd Pompano have been accounted for by anglers fishing the daylight hours. Brusher are still being caught in the Venice areas where some good fish were landed earlier in the week and last night as we gigged a number of nice doormat sized flounder for dinner.

The Nokomis Beach area or North jetty is also producing some good brown skates and some bigger sharks, along with nice Snook and if angling at night using live pins, the Reds are tearing em up! Sheepshead has moved into the rocks on both sides with a vengeance and is in competition if using shrimp with the Pinfish or Grunts to Snapper. Best bet is sand fleas. Find your own or buy em from Mr. Sheepshead at the North Jetty Fish Camp or Papa’s on the pier at the Venice pier.

How to Tie a Yarn Fly for Fly Fishing -- powered by ExpertVillage.com

Let your imagination go on this one guys for it can catch fish a million ways from Sunday; tied in the middle as in twin pony tails single hook, treble, no hook, multiple ect…For years I have caught toothy fish with nylon stockings, drinking straws and knitting yarn because they are cheap to use and easy to make on the spot lures. The drinking straws work on almost any species of fish where as the stockings only on those with teeth but both are not eco-friendly as one is plastic and the other nylon, both lasing hundreds if not more, years to degrade if ever. Yarn on the other hand is rope, twine and is esuriently, biodegradable and hook free if you wish to fish that way making it kid friendly! Yarn Flies are with a hooks optional clause but try without and just see how many mackerels you will still catch. Add strips of flash as in foil or spray with glue and add silver glitter; the colors are endless and the price is unbelievable. You won’t know until you try it, so what do you have to lose. Other people in other parts of the world and country use this for Pike to Musky like in this video on how to make such a lure. Try it, have fun and “FISH ON!”

SHARK IN VENICE

Here we go again...

One can go to Venice and see an abundance of sharks from Hammers to Bulls, man-eaters all but that is here in Florida not in our sister city Venice aboard where Michael Angelo’s David is in place but not a man eating shark as depicted in Baldwin’s “Shark in Venice.” Great movie as to remember the moments when I too traversed the canals, and touristic views but it ends there as I as a sharker can but only chuckle to out rightly scream with laughter in this last ditch effort to bring vengeance onto a fish to which its self is already endangered by a worse killer than itself…us! A shark movie without a shark might be a touch toothless. Oh well, the scenery's pretty...Let us get the formalities over with – this is a film starring Stephen Baldwin and some other people who must have been…

Pier Fishing Survival Tips

  • Fish are migratory. Try different sides of the pier and pay attention to times and weather conditions when you are catching fish. Use a good logbook to take notes.
  • Fish the Break Water
  • Watch for birds. Where the gulls or terns are usually so are the fish.
  • Look for cloudy water and fish right where it meets the clear water.
  • Try dropping a line straight down instead of casting. Fish like to be close to the pier.
  • Unless you plan to surf fish leave the long rod at home, they can get cumbersome on a pier.
  • In summer time, try fishing at night.
  • Consolidate your tackle so you only have to make one trip to the pier, an old golf bag, although strange looking serves this purpose quite well

Cooler(s)

One-handed coolers are convenient for holding fish and bait. Any fish that is intended for dinner; dress and place in plastic zip lock bags asap in order to keep fresh and not contaminate the ice with fish smells and such. Avoid soaking your fish in water; drain cooler frequently.

5 Gallon Bucket

A five-gallon bucket with a board for a top can serve multiple purposes. If the day is cool, a bucket can be bait bucket, cooler, and tackle box. Cut notches in the top of the bucket then suspend your favorite lures from the notches. Put ice and bait into separate plastic bags. Cool your catch with the ice.

 Essentials

Etiquettes in Pier Angling

VENICE CITY PIER, VENICE FLORIDA
A Mack Attack Everywhere
Fish for You and Me!

Crowded piers during a fishing expedition or at anytime the bite is on, could lead to conflict, if proper etiquettes are not in place. Larry the “Cable Guy”, GET-R-DONE, says stupid cannot be taught, so if you do not wish to be labeled ‘stupid’ adhere to those unwritten rules we will call “Etiquettes in Pier Angling.” I remember back in the early nineties fishing the limestone creeks of Pennsylvania for rainbow trout. On opening day, it was like standing in queue at a bus stop in Britain with thirty or more people lined up bank to bank on each side of the river, out to get his limit. Disputes were few as those unwritten rules of engagement went into play, unless someone along the line was out of the norm and doing it their way.  When in Rome, do as the Romans do and do not become The Ugly American.

When angling on a pier or structure, space is limited all the time and even less during the running of the kings to the rolling of the tarpon with the thunder of the shark, not far behind, so it is of the utmost importance when fishing a pier to conform to the type of angling pursued at that time. Remembering that at different places along a pier, yield different species of fish, so versatility comes into play along with choices, an example would be of that in shark fishing, at night on the end of the pier, there can be twenty or more lines in the water with all the anglers fishing in the same manner.  Tangles to tempers seldom occur because each person respects each other’s space, much as riding the tube or the subway here in the states. The rhythm of the fish comes into play and upon a hook up, all lines come in without a mumble or a word as this is how to dance on the boards in good sportsmanship; giving the hooked up angler the chance to play his fish without the hindrances of lines in the way. Upon break off or release, all anglers cautioning all to “Duck or Bleed” proceeds to cast back from his original point of play. With everyone in sync and following these unwritten rules of etiquettes in pier angling, there are fewer opportunities for trouble to follow.

Usually trouble brews as in someone doing it his or her way because it is all about me. Like ballooning out bait across nineteen lines without even giving a thought to anyone else, remember Larry the Cable Guy? Not giving up space to the person with the hooked fish is a great way to meet new friends you do not wish to know; give right of way to all hook-ups for you do not want to be the start of an on going war or worse, it could make for a bad trip. In addition, do not jump the line. If an angler hooked it up in the corner of the pier, reels in to check his bait, leaves to cut new bait, stay away from his spot. It maybe a public pier but hey, give everyone a break and wait until he is finished before jumping into his grave; especially if he just caught a fish! That spot is not the only place the fish congregate. Maybe he is rigging slightly different, as if he is jigging off the bottom and you are not. Change your tactics, do not steal his spot. Put yourself in their shoes because it might be you next time and you just may get back what you put out. Positive reinforcement is always best with learning better etiquettes in pier angling by practicing positive mentoring through fishing.

Did You Know That The

SAILCAT IS ALSO KNOWN AS:

The Crucifix Fish

Of all the fishes in the sea
Our Lord chose the lowly Sailcat
to remind us of his misery.
His body on the cross is outlined;
the hilt of the sword,
which plunged into his side,
is clearly defined.
Look at the back of the fish’s bone
where the Roman shield is shown.
When you shake the bone,
you will hear the dice being tossed
for our Lord’s bloodstained dress,
those who can hear them
will be blessed.
