Venice Florida Anglers Premiere Resource Guide to your home away from home, from Venice Florida on the Sharks Tooth Coast.

Marketing Venice Florida, as the “Shark Tooth Capital of the World” and billed to the slogan for Florida, “Fishing Capital of the World”, then it becomes natural to begin our visit, atop and out on the boards of the cities fishing pier; all roads lead back to the beach as does our splendor and beauty. Welcome to the Sharks Tooth Coast, encompassing the beaches of Venice, Casey Key, Casperson’s and the bays to inland waterways of Laurel, Nokomis, Osprey, the ICW and back home in Venice, Florida.

The Venice Municipal Pier, located at

1600 Harbor Drive South

jets out into the Gulf of Mexico adjacent from the cities airport. A small but modest tackle/souvenirs shop, Papas, is located a quarter of the 700 foot long plus pier with rod to sharks tooth scoop rentals and live (in season) to various frozen baits. The pier is open 24/7, with anglers only permitted on the pier after park hours, 12 am to 6 am. The bait Shoppe, Papas is open 6 am to 9 pm weather permitting. Fishing is free to all alike, resident to non-resident, though all State of Florida fishing regulations must be adhered to at all times. Our address here on the web is designed in catching all who would fish from our pier; hence, Venice Pier Anglers. As an angler on the Venice Florida Pier we would encourage you to respect our rules and regulations while practicing the philosophy of “Positive Mentoring through Fishing” and in doing such, you will pass on down to all you meet a feeling of pride and worth. From six-inch pinfish to fourteen foot Hammerheads, Venice pier has a fish to meet everybody’s needs or wants. Like so many varieties of visitors to our area, depending on the season, so to are our aquatic friends passing through the area in the waters off our beaches and in our bays. King mackerel, tarpon, snook, sea trout, weakfish, flounder, Spanish mackerels, groupers, triple tail, pompano, permit and millions of different types of bait fishes herded up by our resident dolphins and over fourteen different types of sharks, make our Venice area along the Sharks Tooth Coast a Mecca in angling opportunities.

However, fishing is but all to some, the rest may be in need of other activities and recreations to curb their appetites. The Venice area, charmingly small compared to giants such as Naples but our area has an abundance of nightlife, restaurants, and tourist shell shops to Fine Arts. Quaint strolls along the avenues, the theatre, fine dining to dancing on the beach; Venice and its surrounding areas offer a something for everyone entrée, pleasing the pallet in all who would come and visit Venice Florida, its Shark Tooth Coast through the correspondence and announcements from the Venice Pier Anglers home page.

== IN THE SKY THIS WEEK ==

Before the use of Loran or GPS there was but a sextant and compass. Prior to these tools in traveling the waterways of the world was but the stars themselves…

The First Quarter Moon is Monday 8 September. Venus and Mercury are easily seen together in the early evening sky, with dimmer Mars above them forms a distinct triangle. Over the week the triangle becomes tighter, then a line. By Thursday 11 September, Mars and Venus are exceptionally close. In the early evening of Saturday 6 September, the dark side of the Moon passes over the star 2 Scorpio. This event can easily be seen in binoculars. Jupiter is the brightest object above the eastern horizon in the evening and its moons look great in binoculars.

You could find yourself in quite a spot without a

SPOT

Satellite Personal Tracker

Think you have it all when out and about on your adventure; GPS, VHF, Wallet, Cell Phone, Camera, Car keys, bet you do not have a SPOT. The bite is on and your heading to your favorite spot to fish so why are you not carrying your favorite spot with you too at all times, for if nothing else, just a piece of mind. You do not wish to come face to face with reality when you are just out of range of a signal or your boat battery went dead do you.

Personal Locator Beacon: “It Hits the SPOT if you have lost your way or just might be late and do not wish for you loved ones to wait. Measuring 4.38- X 2.75- X 1.5-inches and weighing 7.37 ounces (including the two AA batteries required to power the device), the SPOT device is connected to global positioning and communications satellites around the world, all connected to on-the-ground monitoring/communications centers. Hence, when an outdoors adventurer breaks a leg while backpacking in the Sierras or loses a food cache in Alaska to a marauding black bear, a simple push of a button sends an emergency 9-1-1 call or a help me call to emergency responders or family/friends in moments. “All of us have heard the news stories of people getting lost, stranded or worse! Out in the waters of your inshore or remote areas beyond the range of their cellular phones, we have all wondered what we would do if caught in dangerous or potentially life-threatening situations, out of reach of cellular contact or a protocol not requiring immediate assistance but instead just a reassurance of “I love you and I’m running late”. Now, with SPOT, you can send a message for help or tell family members, friends or the authorities exactly where to find you using GPS accuracy. For anyone who ever drove their truck or car, or works or plays anywhere regardless of cellular coverage, help are now only a push button away.”

SPOT message and tracking functions enable users to send messages to friends, family or emergency responders, based on varying levels of need and to visually tracking the location of the SPOT Satellite Messenger:

  • Alert 9-1-1 dispatches emergency responders to an exact location

  • Ask for Help sends a request for help to friends and family

  • Check In lets contacts know where you are and that you are okay

  • Track Progress sends and saves your location and allows contacts to track your progress using Google Maps™

SPOT can also be used for commercial lone worker safety applications for those businesses with employees operating in remote areas outside the range of cellular and other wireless communications. It is also a valuable safety tool for any person who drives their automobile outside of cellular coverage or for emergency messaging during natural disasters such as hurricanes or other situations when cellular or land-based communications may be damaged or unavailable; from disaster preparedness to outdoor adventure purposes, live to tell about it™, by marking your SPOT.

In remote corners of the world, where lack of cell phone coverage can impede calls for help, this marker could be a lifesaver. The 7.37-

Ounce waterproof device can send GPS coordinates and short messages via satellite to a traveler’s loved ones. In an emergency,

SPOT acts like a beacon until aid arrives. It also records one’s position over time so trips can be plotted and re played on Google Maps.

Half of Skyway fishing piers to close for safety reasons Bradenton Herald

The Sunshine Skyway Piers, touted as the longest fishing piers in the world, were adapted from the approaches of the historic, old bridge rebuilt after being irreparably damaged in a shipping accident in the 1980's, where a freighter slammed into a main spam causing the collapsing of the bridge at the time and loss of life to those traveling in autos above.. The eastern portions of old bridge, built in 1954, will close as deterioration and saltwater corrosion have lead to the end of the eastside approaches lifespan. To maintain public safety, the eastside fishing piers will close beginning August 29, 2008 on both the north and south entranceways.

The Westside approaches were built in 1971 and they are expected to remain open at least until 2021, the range of their projected 50 year lifespan.

Did You Know That The

SAILCAT IS ALSO KNOWN AS:

The Crucifix Fish

Of all the fishes in the sea
Our Lord chose the lowly Sailcat
to remind us of his misery.
His body on the cross is outlined;
the hilt of the sword,
which plunged into his side,
is clearly defined.
Look at the back of the fish’s bone
where the Roman shield is shown.
When you shake the bone,
you will hear the dice being tossed
for our Lord’s bloodstained dress,
those who can hear them
will be blessed.
